As autumn slowly draws to a close in South Tyrol and the first chilly nights cast a silvery glow over the vineyards, one of the most atmospheric times of the year begins. Before snow and Advent transform the valleys, the region celebrates Törggelen – a centuries-old tradition that honours the new wine and brings people together around long tables. Chestnuts, homemade dumplings, Schlutzkrapfen, Kaminwurzen, sweet Zelten – dishes that taste of the season, the land and community. This convivial experience carries a warmth that runs like a thread through into winter.

As soon as the first snowflakes settle on the alpine pastures and mountain peaks, South Tyrol glides gently into the Advent season. No abrupt change, but a transition accompanied by candlelight, scents and quiet rituals. In the historic streets of Brixen, Bolzano, Bruneck and Merano, craft markets, music and regional specialities create an atmosphere that is not garish, but soothing. You sense hospitality not as a concept, but as an attitude of the people who live here – open, warm and approachable.

A treat that makes winter even more special

Winter in South Tyrol is inextricably linked to cuisine – not as an afterthought, but as an integral part of the culture. The cuisine reflects the region’s position between the Alpine and Mediterranean worlds: warming soups and aromatic game are combined with light pasta dishes, fresh herbs and delicate textures. It is this balance that is so satisfying. A dish should not seek to impress, but to bring people together.

Accompanied by wines that make no secret of their origins: an elegant Lagrein, a mineral-rich Pinot Blanc or a Gewürztraminer with subtle spice. They accompany evenings devoted entirely to indulgence – by candlelight, with the scent of wood and hosts who look after their guests with palpable joy. The result is not an opulent experience, but a mindful winter treat that lingers long in the memory.

Winter that does you good

Outdoors, South Tyrol exudes a special sense of tranquillity at this time of year. Gliding on skis down sun-drenched slopes, finding your own rhythm on the cross-country trails across vast plateaus, or setting off on touring skis towards a quiet summit – all of this brings a sense of clarity. Here, exercise doesn’t feel like a chore, but rather a natural extension of the landscape. Even a mindful walk through snow-covered vineyards or to a viewpoint can become a moment that stays with you.

And it is precisely this alternation between crisp cold and cosy warmth that makes the days so perfect. It is the simple, genuine moments that matter: a hot soup after being outdoors, a good book by the fireside, a glass of wine whilst chatting, a sauna with a view of snow-capped mountains. Nothing is staged – everything feels just right.

In winter, South Tyrol offers a form of relaxation that doesn’t need to be forced. It arises almost naturally – through nature, cuisine, encounters and that special sense of serenity you feel here. You don’t just travel here to have an experience. You travel here to rediscover your own rhythm.

"Why should you visit South Tyrol? The region offers a unique blend of nature, sport, indulgence and culture. Whether you’re seeking the tranquillity of the mountains, looking to tackle sporting challenges or simply want to unwind – South Tyrol has something for everyone. The warm hospitality of the locals, the varied landscape and the blend of tradition and modernity make every stay an unforgettable experience. A visit to South Tyrol is more than just a holiday – it is an invitation to enjoy life in all its diversity."
