Southern Burgenland is the quiet south,
that echoes for a long time

Between vineyards, thermal steam and wide paths, an attitude to life unfolds that touches both the body and the senses.
Those who think they know Austria have often never seen southern Burgenland. And anyone who experiences it quickly realises: this piece of land ticks differently. It is quieter than the classic Alpine regions, sunnier than you would expect, further than the eye can often perceive - and warmer, not only in terms of the weather, but also in terms of the tone between people.
Here in the extreme south-east of the country, nestled between the Hungarian lowlands and the foothills of the Styrian hills, lies a region that eludes the quick glance - but reveals itself to all those who are willing to get involved: on quiet paths, gentle horizons and intensive encounters with landscape, flavour and character.
Southern Burgenland is the unknown face of Austria - a region without kitsch, but with soul. Far away from the tourist mainstream, but full of places that touch you. For all those who measure their journeys not just in kilometres, but in moments. For sports enthusiasts who want to combine nature with a high standard, for those seeking relaxation with depth, for connoisseurs looking for authenticity.
Those who get moving - on two wheels, in running shoes or on foot - will encounter a landscape here that slows you down and revitalises you at the same time. And those who pause for a moment often find exactly what is lost in everyday life: clarity, presence and a feeling of vastness that goes far beyond the geographical.
Southern Burgenland is not a holiday destination like any other. It's a place where you don't just go on holiday - you arrive. With yourself.

Exercise with a view - rolling hills, wide paths, quiet forests
Topographically, southern Burgenland is an invitation to get moving: No high mountains, but a lively hilly landscape with rhythmic ups and downs. Ideal terrain for gravel bikes, e-mountain bikes, trail running or extended hikes. Those who prefer a sporty and scenic route can, for example, set off on the Paradiesroute Südburgenland - a 260 km long circular tour with a total of 4,300 metres of altitude difference, which leads through 19 municipalities and passes over 50 pleasure stations. The Jennersdorf-Güssing-Oberwart region also offers a wealth of opportunities for all ability levels with over 1,000 kilometres of cycle paths.
For runners and walkers, there are several marked running routes in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, which lead through quiet woodland, past vineyards and fields - in an ideal climate: the region is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year and scores with a mild Pannonian influence - ideal for outdoor activities right into late autumn.

Nature that touches - thermal hills, floodplains, volcanic landscapes
In the idyllic wine nature park around Eberau and Moschendorf, you can experience an unspoilt cultural landscape with rare orchid meadows, dry grassland and gnarled old trees. Particularly impressive: the view from the Csaterberg vineyard, where wine taverns nestle between the vines and forests - perfect for an active enjoyment tour.
In the south near Jennersdorf, the gentle expanse of the Styrian-Slovenian volcanic landscape begins, whose fertile soils still characterise the region today. And the Raab flows through the centre of southern Burgenland - a quiet, underrated river that you can paddle, fish or simply cycle along.
A tip for nature lovers: the Burg reservoir near Rechnitz - located on the border to Central Burgenland, but a real power spot for early morning swimming, SUP or yoga by the water.
Recharge your batteries in the depths - thermal springs & new energy
Southern Burgenland is rich in thermal springs, which not only attract wellness holidaymakers. Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Stegersbach and Loipersdorf in particular are known for their mineral-rich waters. If you want to regenerate after a workout, you will find the ideal combination of fitness and regeneration here.
Uhudler, oil & openness - Cuisine with character
Hardly any other region in Austria has preserved its culinary character as authentically as southern Burgenland. The centrepiece: Uhudler, a wild, unmistakable wine made from direct producer vines such as Concord or Isabella - lightly sparkling, fruity, idiosyncratic. The best place to try it is in one of the many Kellerstöckl, small historic wine cellars, often with just one table and lots of charm.
Equally typical of the region: pumpkin seed oil, Zickental moor cheese, sheep and goat cheese from small producers, apple and elderberry juices, all from sustainable, regional production. Ideal for guests who live consciously and want to know where their food comes from.
What you have to see - and what you better feel
- Güssing Castle - the oldest castle in Burgenland, enthroned on an extinct volcano, with a panoramic view over the whole of southern Burgenland.
- Heiligenbrunn wine cellar district - an ensemble of 100 thatched wine cellars, some of which are over 200 years old.
- Weinbergstraße Deutsch Schützen - a festival of colour and fragrance, especially during the grape harvest in autumn.
- The three-country Raab Nature Park - with hiking trails and unspoilt meadows, ideal for mindful walking and birdwatching.
- Königsdorf natural swimming lake - for a refreshing dip after the run.
The people: warm, down-to-earth, open
People live differently in southern Burgenland. Slower, more engaging, more hospitable. People treat you with honest openness and a twinkle in their eye - and with a pride in their region that is infectious. Anyone who comes here is not treated like a tourist, but like a guest. And that makes all the difference.
