The Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See region: an active destination that captures the imagination, set amidst water, woodland and sweeping views

Here, where Carinthia reveals its Mediterranean side and the rhythm of nature sets the pace for body and mind, lies one of Austria’s most diverse regions: the Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See region. A triad of crystal-clear lakes, sun-kissed peaks and a zest for life that can be felt in every movement. Those who come here are not merely seeking a break – but an experience for all the senses.

Lake Ossiach – Exercise in Balance

Lake Ossiach is more than just a beautiful postcard view. It is a natural training ground, a haven of tranquillity and a source of renewed energy. Situated at just under 500 metres above sea level and filled with water of pure drinking quality, in summer it invites you to enjoy a daily morning ritual in the water, with temperatures reaching up to 26 °C. Early risers swim through the mist that lies like a veil over the smooth surface, whilst the sky slowly shifts from pastel to gold.

During the day, the tranquil lake transforms into a hub of activity: SUP enthusiasts glide across the water, rowers cut through the water, whilst fitness enthusiasts explore the 27 km circular route by bike or on foot – a gently undulating route that repeatedly offers views of the glistening water. And for those seeking an intense physical experience, the best thing to do is jump straight into the cool water for recovery immediately after your workout.

A few kilometres further south lies Lake Faaker See, renowned for its almost unreal turquoise waters. It is smaller, but no less striking. Here, active visitors can find a challenge in open-water swimming, kayaking, Nordic walking along the lakeside path, or cycling on the surrounding panoramic trails with views of the Mittagskogel – that iconic mountain which makes the backdrop almost dramatically beautiful.

The region around Lake Faaker See is also a place for mindful retreat: small forest clearings, quiet spots, gentle paths through pine forests – ideal for mindful exercise or forest bathing, which is more than just a trend here. It is quality of life in action.

Villach – alpine urbanity with heart and depth

Villach is the region’s urban centre – young, creative, historic and incredibly full of life. Amidst medieval alleyways, street food markets, riverside cycle paths along the Drau and cosy cafés, you can experience culture, cuisine and southern charm on a par with the best.

Once a year, the town is transformed into a stage for the joy of life: the Villacher Kirchtag, Austria’s largest traditional festival, brings traditional dress, dance, music and genuine emotion to the town’s streets. And whilst people dance in the main square, the surrounding mountains and lakes glisten in the summer light – as if they too were joining in the celebrations.

The Gerlitzen – Training with a view

The Gerlitzen Alpe towers high above the lake – an ideal setting for the sporty and ambitious. The range of options extends from wide hiking paths to challenging trails and picturesque high-altitude paths. The panoramic viewing platform at the summit (1,911 m) rewards early risers with a sunrise that will stay etched in your memory: Light rises over the Karawanken, bathing the surrounding lakes – Lake Ossiach, Lake Wörthersee, Lake Faaker See – in copper and gold. The perfect backdrop for trail running, mountain yoga or challenging mountain hikes that get your heart racing.

On days when thermal conditions are favourable, paragliders dance high above – the Gerlitzen is a hotspot for aerial sports, but also for quieter pursuits such as qigong and mindful walking across the alpine meadows.

The sunny side of the Alps – the climate of movement

What makes this region even more special is its climate. Here, the alpine freshness of the mountains meets the mild, almost Mediterranean weather of the southern side of the Alps. With over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year and warm summers lasting well into September, the region is a hotspot for outdoor activities and active relaxation – almost all year round. The evenings are mild, the light is golden, the air is clear – perfect conditions for sport, relaxation and enjoyment.

Cuisine between the mountains and the lake – authentic delights with character

Those who lead an active lifestyle can still enjoy good food – and in hardly any other region of Carinthia does cuisine blend so skilfully with quality and regional character as it does here. The cuisine around Lake Ossiach reflects the landscape: fresh, down-to-earth and varied.

The Kasnudel, filled with mint, quark and potatoes, hand-rolled and served with brown butter, is more than just a dish – it is a culinary tribute to the region. In the wine taverns along Süduferstraße, you’ll find hand-selected wines, farm-fresh bacon and bread still baked in a wood-fired oven.

Perch, zander and char come straight from the lake – freshly prepared, often grilled over an open fire, sometimes baked in a herb crust. And if you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, treat yourself to a Carinthian cherry slice or a ‘Reindling’ with cinnamon and raisins – ideally in one of the traditional cafés in Ossiach or Villach.

Villach Church Festival – Tradition with heart and a zest for life

A highlight of the Carinthian summer is the Villach Kirchtag – Austria’s largest traditional festival, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year at the start of August. Here, people celebrate, dance and make music – for seven days, right in the heart of Villach’s old town. And anyone who lets themselves be swept along amidst the ‘Schmankerln’ and traditional dancers, amidst live music and parades, will understand what makes the region so special: a zest for life, warmth and a deep sense of home.
