Uphill. Breathe deeply. Arrive. Experience the Zugspitze

Between rugged rock faces, crystal-clear mountain lakes and blooming alpine pastures rises a legend: the Zugspitze. At 2,962 metres, it is the highest peak in Germany and towers over a region that unites two worlds - the Tyrolean Außerfern with places like Ehrwald, Lermoos and Biberwier and the Bavarian Alpine foothills with Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Grainau and Mittenwald. The Zugspitze region is more than just a mountain massif - it is a lifestyle of adventure, mindfulness and alpine happiness.

Two countries, one feeling: the fascination of the Zugspitze

Anyone who jogs through the Loisach Valley in the early morning or rides a mountain bike along the Wetterstein chain will immediately realise that nature is not just a backdrop here, but a powerful companion. The region impresses with its diversity - from dramatic peaks such as the Alpspitze and Zugspitze to tranquil places such as the Eibsee, whose turquoise-coloured water lies like an emerald beneath the mountain massif.

Whether you board the Zugspitze cable car on the German side in Grainau or enjoy the panoramic view from the Gatterl on the Tyrolean side in Ehrwald - the experience is majestic. And yet never overcrowded, never loud. Instead, you can feel the alpine tranquillity here, which is perfect for a decelerated active holiday.

Outdoor paradise for active people: hiking, biking, trail running & more

The Zugspitze region is a natural fitness park. In summer, over 1,200 kilometres of hiking trails await sporty explorers - from family-friendly alpine walks to challenging summit tours such as the Jubiläumsgrat. The round tour around the Wetterstein mountain range is particularly popular, which can be completed in stages and guarantees spectacular panoramas.

Mountain bikers will find an area in a class of its own. Trails such as the descent from Grubigstein near Lermoos or the bike classic through Gaistal offer everything your heart desires: technical passages, flow trails and unforgettable views. Road bikers will love the tour over the Fernpass or the loop through the Isar Valley.

Trail runners appreciate the region for its varied altitude profiles, which challenge even the most ambitious athletes. And those who prefer a quieter pace can explore the forests on a Nordic walking tour or enjoy a relaxing SUP tour on the Eibsee or Plansee lakes.

Winter wonderland: skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing

When winter bathes the landscape in white, the Zugspitze region is transformed into an Alpine snow paradise. The Zugspitze Glacier World is one of the highest ski areas in the Alps - snow-sure, extensive and with views as far as Munich. In Garmisch-Classic, alpine fans get their money's worth on legendary pistes such as the Kandahar.

For ski tourers, there is a paradise away from the lifts - e.g. to the Hochalm near Lermoos or through the quiet valleys near Mittenwald. Snowshoe hikes around the Moos near Grainau or along the Leutascher Geisterklamm gorge combine exercise and tranquillity in a unique way.

Mindfulness and regeneration: yoga, wellness & alpine balance

The Zugspitze region is not only synonymous with adrenaline, but also with balance. Many hotels and chalets offer yoga retreats with mountain views, guided meditation hikes and alpine wellness areas with natural spas and hay baths. In Leutasch, Ehrwald and Grainau in particular, there are hideaways that focus on relaxation and healthy eating - perfect for an active break with a deep impact.

Cuisine with character: regional, down-to-earth, creative

Those who move a lot can enjoy themselves. And in the Zugspitz region, this is possible at the highest level - from rustic hut flair to sophisticated natural cuisine. Try the Allgäu Kässpatzen classic in a mountain hut above Garmisch or treat yourself to freshly caught trout from the Loisach spring area. The Tyrolean side entices with specialities such as Kasspatzln, Tiroler Gröstl or sweet Kiachl.

Gourmets can discover modern Alpine cuisine with a regional twist in hotels such as the Zugspitz Resort, the Posthotel Leermos or at slow food addresses around Mittenwald.

Culture meets nature: Inspiration between mountains, lakes and history

In addition to the natural experience, the Zugspitze region also impresses with its cultural wealth: in Mittenwald, the "violin-making town", you will encounter lively craftsmanship. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, tradition and sport come together - e.g. at the New Year's ski jumping event on the Olympic ski jump. Tyrolean towns such as Lermoos and Ehrwald cultivate customs and hospitality with heart and soul.

The Zugspitze region - where nature training meets joie de vivre

Whether it's a summit assault or a leisurely hike, a trail run or a yoga flow - in the Zugspitze region, everyone will find their own personal feeling of altitude. The combination of nature, activity, regeneration and regional enjoyment is unique. When you holiday here, you don't just travel to a place, you come home to yourself.
